Ospedale Degli Innocenti, Firenze. Photograph. 2007
This photograph illustrates the geometrical harmony present in Brunelleschi’s project, and the proportional relation between plan and elevation in each bay of the portico. Notice the hemispherical domes, which contain an utopian sphere whoce circumference is inscribed within the square at the base of the bay. Similar relationships can be found studying the diagonal of the square and the radius and diameter of the inscribed sphere.
Also notice the projecting “pillar” structures in the wall, which mirror and echo the columns of the Portico, and the elegant use of the pietra serena, which results in a balanced greyscale elevation.
This project embodies the clarity, order and harmony of the Renaissance.
